I have recently issued the second of two catalogues of books from the library of Walter Pagel (1896-1983), one of the most influential historians of science of the twentieth century. The bulk of Pagel’s large library was sold at Sotheby’s in 1983. The books in these catalogues are Pagel’s personal selection of the rarest and most valuable books which he left to his son, the astronomer Bernard Pagel (1930-2007). The selection reflects Walter Pagel’s major areas of historical research, centred on the figures of William Harvey, J. B. van Helmont and Paracelsus, but also includes major works by other key figures in the history of science, including Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Einstein.
