I have recently issued
the second of two catalogues of books from the library of Walter Pagel
(1896-1983), one of the most influential historians of science of the
twentieth century. The bulk of Pagel’s large library was sold at
Sotheby’s in 1983. The books in these catalogues are Pagel’s
personal selection of the rarest and most valuable books which he left
to his son, the astronomer Bernard Pagel (1930-2007). The selection reflects
Walter Pagel’s major areas of historical research, centred on the
figures of William Harvey, J. B. van Helmont and Paracelsus, but also
includes major works by other key figures in the history of science, including
Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Einstein.
