Plates: Portrait and 12 engraved plates; portrait signed ‘C.N. Cochin del. 1772 Aug. de St. Aubin sculp.’, plates unsigned, numbered Planche 1–8; I–II; I–II (bound as throwouts interspersed in the text).
Condition: 197 x 123mm. Portrait creased, some foxing, plates discoloured, slight loss to vol. II p. 357 where it has adhered to the verso of a plate.
Binding: Contemporary mottled calf. Head and tailcaps repaired.
Provenance: W. A. Smeaton (1925–2001), no ownership marks.

First edition. Cole identifies two re-settings, both dated 1773, with unsigned copies of the portrait and vignettes; a second edition was published in 1774 and there was a German translation 1775–76 and Italian translations 1781 and 1788.

The last major text-book based on the phlogiston theory – ‘clear, detailed and practical’ (Partington III, p. 91).
