§ CAMDEN, William (1551–1623).

Remaines concerning Brittaine: but especially England, and the inhabitants thereof: their languages, names, syrnames, allusions, anagrammes, armories, moneys. Empresses, apparell, artillerie, wise speeches, proverbes, poesies, epitaphs. The fourth impression, reviewed, corrected, and increased.

London: Printed by A[dam] I[slip] for Symon Waterson, and are to be sold at his shop, at the signe of the Crowne in Pauls Church-yard, 1629.

Collation: 8vo: A–Y8, 176 leaves, pp. [4] 346 (i.e. 348, pp. 9–10 repeated), woodcut device on title, woodcut headpieces and initials.
Condition: 184 x 138mm. Title soiled and backed with plain paper; tears (original paper flaws) in last leaf closed; scattered foxing but generally a good clean copy.
Binding: Nineteenth-century half calf, rebacked, new endleaves, corners worn.
Provenance: Old signature erased from head of title; Edwin Clarke (1919–1996).

Fourth edition (first 1605, as Remaines of a greater worke, concerning Britaine). The second edition (1614) was revised; the third (1623) and fourth are apparently the same text; the fifth (1636) was edited and enlarged by John Philpot.

The left-overs from Camden’s Britannia, but none-the-less ‘frequently witty and wise’ (ODNB). It includes the first historically organised anthology of medieval poetry, a historical and comparative study of the English language, collections of names with their meanings, ‘grave speeches, and wittie apothogemes,’ epigrams and epitaphs.
